6/10/2023 0 Comments Ashen winter by mike mullinI really didn't like Alyssa, with her clingyness, shrieking, and slutty behavior. Enough already, Darla - you don't have to always have the tough act. She snapped at everyone, was always crossing her arms, and was ready to be offended by everything anyone said. In Ashen Winter, I got tired of it real quick. She had a sharp tongue, but it never felt like The Attitude it just somehow fit her. Darla was strong and practical in Ashfall. And the same goes for Darla, though my indifference morphed something akin to actual dislike with her. Why? I don't really know - I just no longer cared. His resourcefulness and kindness continues in Book #2, but I no longer cared whether or not he lived or died. He was funny, he was resourceful, and he had a kind heart. In Ashfall, I liked Alex relatively well. I love the cover art I only wish my love for the series could extend to Ashen Winter.Ĭharacters: Ah, what to say about our beloved protagonists? Not much. Cover Blurb: Yes or No? The continued simplicity and themed covers are a great plus for me.

6/10/2023 0 Comments Books of blood volume 4 6Some of this film is strong, but other parts just drag or seem extraneous. The problem with "Book of Blood" is an issue not unique to this film: it is adapted from a short story, and to stretch a short story into a full, feature film just does not always work. While I enjoy Harrison's "Tales From the Darkside" better, I think this better showcases his artistic abilities. It's delightfully haunting, and the gore effects are enjoyable (there is a face-ripping scene that stands out as one of the film's highlights). Between him and the cinematographer, they make a gorgeous film with a perfect setting and mood. John Harrison directs this film beautifully. Even Simon Bamford of "Nightbreed" and "Hellraiser" shows up to continue his ubiquitous run in Barker films. And that gateway is connected to a certain place in space (in both cases, an upstairs room of a house). The Barker themes are evident: like "Hellraiser", the dead have a gateway to this world through the flesh and blood of the living. This is a work of Clive Barker's, originally two of his short stories combined together. But first, he tells his story of how his skin got the way it is: torn to shreds and covered in unique markings. A young man, captured for his unique skin, is about to be flayed by a bounty hunter. 6/9/2023 0 Comments The farmer and the clownFrazee expertly paces the story in sequential panels, implying the grandfatherly man's growing tenderness for the lost child. The next day, the farmer cavorts to cheer him up, improving his own mood in the process the companions milk a cow and juggle fresh eggs, to the dismay of four hens. Back at the farmer's cabin, the clown washes the paint off his face, revealing a mouth turned down in a child's sorrow. The slouching farmer approaches the clown, who mimes the accident and rushes to be comforted. The slim, white-bearded farmer, dressed in a somber black hat and overalls, is startled to see a knee-high clown ejected from the caboose. The action transpires on an austere gray-brown prairie beneath a dust-colored sky, where a frowning farmer watches a colorful circus train bouncing along a rough track. The founders of Mischief, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer. And that’s essentially what summons the silent fairy Tinkerbell (Yara Shahidi) and the boy who’s never grown up, Peter Pan (Alexander Molony). 2 days ago &0183 &32 Peter Pan Goes Wrong is the manic brainchild of U.K.-based theatre company Mischief. She’s fearful, a little bitter and wholly uninterested in embarking on this monumental change in her young life. It’s set in Victorian England, on the eve of eldest child, Wendy (Ever Anderson), going away to boarding school. Barrie’s original story of the same name. The first half of the screenplay, by Lowery and Toby Halbrooks, is a surprisingly traditional retelling of novelist J.M. But it sure is a bummer of a take on Peter Pan’s story at one point, Pan even laments, “This isn’t fun anymore,” and that sums up this adaptation to a tee. It’s certainly a gorgeous film to look at thanks to its lush sets and costume design, and gorgeous locations representing Neverland. Now Lowery returns to try again with Peter Pan & Wendy, which is partially based on Walt Disney’s animated Peter Pan (1953). Arguably, it remains the gold standard in that it has an original take that did its own thing, and did it very well. Of the 20-plus live-action remakes of Disney animated movies since 1994’s The Jungle Book, one of the standouts is writer/director David Lowery’s 2016 reworking of Pete’s Dragon. If it's severed, ie, the writer removes themselves completely from what they are expressing, I have to work harder to hold my attention on it.
